CHV Fellowship Workshop 1: The Basics Of Capital
CHV Fellowship | Foundational Workshop with Todd Richter
Who decides which healthcare innovations get funded, which organizations get the money needed to grow, and which ideas make it to scale? Understanding capital is one way to understand how the healthcare system works.
Capital influences far more than startups and venture investing. It shapes decisions across healthcare delivery, technology, pharmaceuticals, public health, and health policy, affecting both for-profit businesses and not-for-profit organizations. The people who allocate and manage capital bring different incentives, priorities, and definitions of value. Understanding how they think can help you become a more effective leader, advocate, entrepreneur, or decision-maker, regardless of where you work.
In this foundational workshop, Todd Richter, in conversation with Rebecca Sale, will introduce the language and mental models behind capital and explore four essential questions:
1. What is the definition of an investment?
2. Who invests? Who are the players, and what motivates them?
3. Where does the money come from?
4. How is value determined? How do people value organizations, ideas, and opportunities?
5. How are opportunities evaluated? What factors shape decisions about where to invest and why?
You don't need a background in finance or plans to become an investor to benefit. The goal is to build a practical understanding of how capital influences the healthcare system, how financial incentives shape decisions, and how to engage more effectively with the people and organizations that influence what happens next.
