​The Climate Party is building a Scenius - collective genius - for Climate solutions in India.

​This is a series of immersive learning & community events curated to enable people, either already working in or seriously considering a transition to the Climate space, to discover more of their kind across domains and cross-pollinate ideas for action.

​Event Details

​A park. A lake. A piece of grassland. A landfill. These can look like very different things, but each is also the result of decisions - about land, development, public interest, livelihoods and who gets a say.

​Many of the commons we enjoy today have intriguing histories of citizen intervention - people who noticed something changing, understood what was at stake, found the right information, built public pressure and sometimes went to court. The recent movement to preserve Lalbagh served a strong reminder.

​This month, we’re bringing together people who have been close to these questions and who KNOW THE SYSTEM to share something every citizen should know: how change happens on ground, what citizens around us have fought for, and what tools are available to us to shape Bengaluru’s thriving future.

​Three stories. One expansive toolkit. Effective action.

​Bhargavi Rao, a renowned integrator of local action, science & law, will make us visually relive three local significant stories to understand how decisions get made, what citizens can question, and what it takes to change the course of a decision.

​Spoiler alert: these stories tell us that action CAN lead to positive change.

​Mavallipura: When Bengaluru’s massive waste problem was simply moved out of sight but citizens took control and brought the landfill to an end.

​Challakere: When 1000s of acres of Amrit Mahal Kaval grasslands were diverted for large-scale defence, nuclear, and industrial projects, livelihoods and landscapes with deep ecological significance came under threat. Local action brought the Courts on board to find ways of balancing national development with local rights.

​Koppal: In Talakkal, rain-fed farmland is giving way to solar development. Land that appears “marginal” on paper has historically supported food crops, livestock, and rural livelihoods. This story on “systems” that disappear in pursuit of economic development is unraveling as you read.

​Preeta Dhar, Senior Resident Fellow at Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy will help us know, in 100% non-lawyer-ly fashion, what do we actually need to know to participate meaningfully in decisions about our city. Despite being a lawyer herself, she’ll give us hacks to get work done without involving lawyers :D

​V RamPrasad, Founder, Friends of Lakes, brings years of experience preventing Bengaluru’s lakes and urban commons from disappearing. He will share practical knowledge of what it takes to move from concern about a place to effective citizen action and institutional change. Beware: his courage is infectious.

​Together, they’ll help us unpack the things most of us think only when something has already gone wrong: How do you find out what is actually being proposed? Where do you find the documents? How to file an RTI application & what it can reveal? Who is accountable? When should citizens organise, and when is legal action the right next step?

​This climate party is about becoming more informed, less intimidated and capable of participating in the decisions that shape the city we call home. We want all to cross the chasm between worry & action because much of what we value about Bengaluru today exists because citizens before us chose to cross it.
