Journocoders: Tracking boats and seeing the seas with Global Fishing Watch
This month we'll be learning how to track boats and see the seas with Global Fishing Watch.
Global Fishing Watch is nonprofit that freely shares knowledge and data about human activity at sea (not just fishing!). You can access a lot of that information through the map on their website, but they also allow you to access the underlying data using their APIs, which is what we'll be focusing on.
In this session we'll be following tutorials that cover how to use GFWR, a package for accessing GFW data from the R programming language. We'll cover how to search for vessels, and how to get all the information available about what they've been up to. We'll also look at creating custom maps of human activity at sea — things such as fishing effort, transshipment, and port visits.
All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event. For this session you will also need to sign up to Global Fishing Watch.
