How might an FOI Network encourage the protection and expansion of Freedom of Information in the UK?
The FOI Network is currently an informal coalition of civil society organisations, journalists, and academics interested in Freedom of Information (FOI) in the UK. Those involved include requesters and those with a wider interest in policy around FOI and government ethics and transparency.
As part of a JRRT-funded project, we are exploring ways to potentially expand and formalise the FOI Network and its activities.
This workshop will explore how the Network could encourage collaborative efforts to protect and advance FOI both legally and politically.
The session will focus on:
Key threats and opportunities for FOI
Role of a network in advocacy, coordination, or public awareness
Ideas for Network-supported advocacy / awareness activities
Appetite for Network-led FOI protection work
Workshop findings will help shape future FOI Network activities, with the aim of developing ideas into pilot projects and initiatives that could be supported and funded to strengthen transparency and accountability in the UK.
Come along if you’re:

Working in civil society, journalism, academia, or policy with an interest in transparency and accountability
Concerned about current or emerging threats to FOI, including legislative or cultural challenges
Curious about how collective action and collaboration could help defend and expand FOI rights
Interested in helping shape future initiatives, advocacy, or projects that support openness and public accountability
