Tang Da Wu and The Artists Village — The Story Behind

​The Artists Village first used the name in January 1989. It was an art space first set up by Tang Da Wu in June 1988 known as "Da Wu's Place". The name "The Artists Village" was first used in a 10 artists open studio show in Jan 1989. It became the art space as well as the informal art collective until Mar 1990 when the land was returned to the authority for new development. "The Artists Village" was eventually registered as a society in Feb 1992. It remains active without a permanent space from Feb 1992 till this day.

​The inaugural exhibition of the Prestige Art gallery "From Passion to Mission: Southeast Asian Artists Group Exhibition," showcases four ink-on-paper works by Tang Da Wu, paying tribute to this iconic Asian contemporary artist. ​About Tang Da Wu (1943-)

​Tang Da Wu is the founder of the pioneering Artist Village in Singapore and one of the most renowned performance artists in Southeast Asia. He is also one of the most prominent figures in the contemporary art scene in Singapore. Reflecting on his identity as a Chinese Singaporean, Tang Da Wu employs various media and incorporates local symbols and images in his performance art creations. His works have been exhibited in the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Australia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

​About Speaker Koh Nguang How(1963-)

​Koh Nguang How has worked as an Assistant Curator at the National Museum Art Gallery in Singapore. He was also the founding member of The Artist Village.

​Since 2005, he has been working on the "Singapore Art Archive Project." Through the "Singapore Art Archive Project," he has organized 15 exhibitions on Singapore art and culture, both domestically and internationally.
