Don't Lose the Room

Staying present when the room gets hot

Every facilitator knows the moment. The temperature climbs, two people dig in, and you can feel the group turn to look at you — waiting to see what you'll do. The instinct is to fix it: mediate, smooth, get everyone back to calm as fast as possible. But the most important work in that moment isn't out there in the conflict. It's in you.

This session isn't about resolving conflict or de-escalating tension. It's about the quieter skill underneath all of that — how you regulate yourself when the heat rises, so you can stay genuinely present rather than just appear calm. The group takes its cues from you. When you hold steady, they tend to follow.

We'll spend our time on the inner stance we call being like water — calm without being disengaged, curious rather than certain, holding the group's purpose without gripping your own ego — and on the concrete practices that help you find that stance in the moment, not just admire it in theory.

Bring a real situation you're sitting with. You'll leave with something you can use the next time a room starts to slip.
