Book Club: The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
For our January read and first book of the year, Lit Club and Limousine Readings will gather around The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison — a timeless novel that asks us to think critically about how we understand beauty, harm, and whose stories are centered.
Morrison’s debut follows Pecola Breedlove, a young Black girl growing up in 1940s Ohio, whose longing for blue eyes unfolds within a world shaped by racism, internalized beauty standards, and silence. Penguin Random House’s newest edition of the novel features a foreword by Jacqueline Woodson and prompts us to consider: What is this texts enduring legacy? How and why is it relevant in today's culture?
We’ll meet in the private room at Sisters, a beloved Black-owned bar in Brooklyn, for intimate discussion over bites and drinks. The series will culminate in a panel conversation reflecting on the legacy of Morrison’s work and its influence on contemporary writers on the 23rd (more on that soon) Join us for these impactful conversations!
