In Agunamakuash, Piero Gandini recounts fourteen years of humanitarian leadership on the front lines of crisis across Angola, Indonesia, Chad, Darfur, Peru, South Sudan, Colombia, and India. Working first with the Jesuit Refugee Service and later with Médecins Sans Frontières, Piero entered some of the harshest environments on Earth driven by a singular purpose: to serve people affected by conflict, injustice, poverty, and political failure. He sat on the ground with refugees, learned local tribal dialects to gain trust, shared meals, and refused to accept that compassion should have limits.
The stories he tells are raw, immediate, and deeply human. Piero brings readers inside high-stakes leadership decisions few ever witness, such as building a remote airstrip with no blueprint, evacuating traumatized patients after violent attacks, providing medical care with inadequate resources, working with landmine survivors, and reaching communities neglected by the humanitarian system. Alongside his partner Joka, he learns that real leadership often begins where protocols end, and it means challenging institutional limits and remaining human when circumstances demand detachment.
Named after the word given to him by a South Sudanese community, Agunamakuash is not a leadership manual. There are no formulas, productivity habits, or polished lessons. Instead, the author offers something far rarer: an unfiltered portrait of leadership under pressure, and a deeply personal account of what happens when a person chooses, day after day, to make a difference and do what is right, even when the cost is high.
