​The roles that defined IT departments for two decades are being hollowed out from the middle, with routine engineering and first-line delivery increasingly automated while the premium shifts toward people who can architect, orchestrate and govern systems they no longer build by hand.

​At the same time the outsourcing model that CIOs have leaned on for cost and scale is being tested, because the work that was cheapest to send offshore is the same work AI now does faster, leaving the services relationship looking very different from the one most contracts were written for.
