Powering Economic Growth and Prosperity with Abundant Domestic Energy

India’s vast subsurface resources, rising cooling demand, and considerable need for industrial heat means the nation has an excellent opportunity to use geothermal to strengthen its energy security and resilience. With thousands of gigawatts of potential for industrial heating, cooling, and selective power generation, geothermal can displace imported fossil fuels—and advance India’s 2047 energy independence and 2070 decarbonisation goals. The comprehensive report The Future of Geothermal in India outlines a path forward.

The report was undertaken in a collaboration between Project InnerSpace and the Council for Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), and authors from CSTEP, Pandit Deendayal Energy University- PDEU, Banaras Hindu University, NIT-Calicut, Indian Institute of Technology, Dhanbad (Indian School of Mines), University of Texas, Austin, IIT-Guwahati, Manipur University, and Columbia University's Center on Global Energy Policy.
