About Event

The First 15 Minutes · D - Disability

A patient becomes drowsy, confused or unresponsive. How do you work out what’s happening?

In D of C–ABCDE, we turn to neurological assessment. We’ll explore what a change in consciousness can tell you, how to assess it systematically and which reversible problems need your attention early.

We’ll explore:

  • Assessing consciousness using AVPU and GCS - and understanding their limitations.

  • What pupils, blood glucose and other bedside findings can reveal.

  • Recognising urgent problems such as hypoglycaemia, seizures and traumatic brain injury, and knowing when to escalate.

For medical students who want a clear approach to a patient whose level of consciousness is changing.

Delivered by Dr Budhwani & Dr El Khatib
