The Farm, the Hunger, and the Network: How Misinformation Works & What To Do About It
Thursday June 18th, 5pm BST / 12pm EDT
While we encourage synchronous attendance, we will provide a recording to all ticket holders that will be viewable for a few weeks.
For years now “misinformation” has been identified by many NGOs and experts as a problem fuelling other grave problems, from public health crises to extremist politics. But what defines misinformation at its core? Why is it such a problem in our society in the present moment?
In this workshop, we’ll define and explore modern misinformation with Diyora Shadijanova, a British-Uzbek journalist, writer, editor, and a strategic communications expert based in London. Then we’ll go even deeper and explore several angles on the problem to find new ways to address it.
We’ll consider:
Why misinformation is often emotionally appealing, even to well-intentioned people (the hunger for misinformation!)
The importance of both 'supply' and' demand' explanations for a full picture of the problem (the “farming” of misinformation!)
How misleading narratives are created and spread (the network that spreads misinformation!)
Different useful approaches to combatting mis- and disinformation and their varied benefits
Diyora Shadijanova is a London-based strategic communications specialist and journalist. Her work on digital culture and misinformation has appeared in The Guardian, VICE, Hyphen, Novara Media, and many other publications. At ACT Climate Labs, Diyora worked on climate communications and disinformation. She was previously Senior Editor at The Lead and an editor at gal-dem magazine, which reported on the lives of marginalised communities in the UK.
