Learning Faster & Better with Two Career-Altering Examples
Why do I do these?
I wanted to share my core motivation behind these sessions. I believe it matters. And I believe it is very unique.
I do everything I do because I want to help great people get ahead and learn the rarest and most potent skills to do so.
Your life is on a branch of the multiverse. I want your life (and career) to be on the highest branch possible, filled with more opportunities, success, and quality of life.
Deep Learning, Applied
Monday's post made the case: normal learning gives you tactics that work in the situation they came in. Great learning gives you the forces underneath, which work in every situation that shares them.
Friday, we do it live, on the two skills where that difference matters most.
Job interviews and influence at work have something in common: no two situations are ever the same. The interviewer changes, the room changes, the stakes change. That's exactly why tactics fail here. "Use the STAR method." "Mirror their language." You can only run a tactic when the situation matches the one it came from, and in interviews and influence, it never does.
The people who stand out aren't running better tactics. They understand what the other person's brain is doing, and they act on that.
So we're going past tactics, into the forces:
Interviewing. The forces that make you stand out more than anyone else they talk to. What the interviewer's brain is actually weighing, why that changes the higher the role, and what makes you the candidate they're still talking about after you leave.
Influence. The forces that cause people to trust you, listen to you, and act on what you say. Why some voices get adopted and others get politely ignored, and what separates the person who gets heard from the person who gets promoted.
By the end you'll have watched the method run twice. That's enough to run it yourself on anything you want to master.
What you'll learn
The forces at work in every job interview, and how to create them deliberately
What the interviewer is actually evaluating, and why it's mostly not your answers
The forces that cause people at work to trust you, listen to you, and act on what you say
How to diagnose why you're not being heard, and what to change
How to run "what forces are at work?" on any skill you want to learn
