Getting Ready for the Impacts of El Niño
Forecasters see a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño this fall and winter (2026-27). Some regions will face drought and elevated heat and fire risk, while others face increased rain & flooding and severe storms.
A common theme during UNGA week was that donors need to take more risks, experiment, and invest now to build capacity for climate impacts on health, education, and community resilience. Yet urgency and action remain disconnected. Leading humanitarian organizations are already piloting new food production methods that withstand erratic weather or strengthening community health responses but they lack the funding to scale them.
