About Event

Historically, governing bodies for international sporting competitions were established to promote mutual respect, fairness, and neutrality. According to the IOC, one of its guiding missions is "to encourage and support the promotion of ethics and good governance in sport". Meanwhile, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA runs a global campaign called "Football United the World" to promote peace, education, and equality.

While governing bodies often promote neutrality and global unity, world politics and international sporting competitions are inextricably linked. Major events such as the Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup serve as massive platforms for national pride and global diplomacy.

Critics claim that these platforms provide strategic ambiguity that allows for political maneuvering, as evidenced by boycotts and protests in decades past.

Governments and athletes are not the only ones on the receiving end of criticisms. FIFA’s decision-making process has faced scrutiny, illustrated by the unprecedented decision to reverse a player suspension following political intervention from US President Donald Trump, prompting accusations of a crisis of neutrality in sports governance.

Should sports be involved in politics, and should politics be involved in sports?
