The Ocean Race Watch Party

​Six teams leave New York tomorrow and point at Europe. We are watching the start live at Base 2.

​The Ocean Race Atlantic is the first point to point race in the event's fifty year history: New York to Lorient, roughly nine days across the Atlantic on 60 foot foiling boats built to cross oceans at speed. Six crews are on the line. Team Malizia, DMG MORI, Oliver Heer Ocean Racing, MSIG Europe, Team Francesca Clapcich powered by 11th Hour Racing, and Paul Meilhat's French team. Every boat sails with a mandatory 50-50 crew, two women and two men, a first in offshore racing. Every boat carries instruments gathering ocean data the whole way across.

​This is the opening of a sailing week in the marina. On Saturday, DLD Sports comes to Base 2, and the Spain Sail Grand Prix brings thirteen crews and their flying catamarans to the water on 5 and 6 September. Different boats, same engineering problem: materials, energy, data, and control at speeds that punish every mistake.
