Join us online for a lunchtime look at the University of Nottingham’s growing spin-out portfolio, and how you can get involved in its first EIS fund.

Hosted by SyndicateRoom and Nottingham Technology Ventures, the university's venture arm. This is a first look at a fund built to give investors access to spin-outs that have until now been backed largely from inside the university, which is ranked 7th in the UK for research power.

What to expect

  • Fund presentation from Dr Alice MacGowan, CEO of Nottingham Technology Ventures, and Tom Britton, Partner at SyndicateRoom, covering the thesis, portfolio construction and the deployment plan

  • Showcases from existing NTV spin-outs, presented by the founders commercialising the research

  • Live Q&A with the fund managers

Why attend? University spin-outs are one of the few corners of UK early-stage investing where the deal flow is not open to everyone. Nottingham Technology Ventures has been building and backing companies out of the University of Nottingham since 2017, has a live portfolio of 40+ spin-outs, and until now has done it without a dedicated EIS vehicle for outside investors. University of Nottingham EIS Fund I changes that: a portfolio of 6 to 8 capital-efficient, IP-rich companies in life sciences, advanced manufacturing, clean tech and digital, drawn from a university ranked 7th in the UK for research power.

This event is the chance to hear the thesis first-hand from the people running it: how NTV selects and supports its spin-outs, how the portfolio will be built and deployed over the next 12 months, and what the exit record so far (over £18m returned to the university since 2014 at an average multiple above 4x) does and does not tell you about the companies coming through now. You'll meet founders from the existing portfolio, put your questions directly to the fund managers, and leave with enough to decide whether the fund belongs in your EIS allocation ahead of the November 2026 deadline.

Past performance is not a guide to future returns, EIS tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change, and capital is at risk.
