About Event

Build and ship a working mini-SaaS in one evening

Codex Community Malaysia and AI Tinkerers Kuala Lumpur are bringing active builders together for a hands-on workshop focused on one outcome:

By the end of the evening, you should have a working product that another person can open, use, and test.

This is not a long product presentation, a generic AI panel, or a session where everyone watches the speaker code.

You will bring an idea, turn it into a structured build brief, create the app with Sites inside Codex, connect data or an API, test the real workflow, and deploy a shareable version.

Expect minimal slides, guided checkpoints, active building, troubleshooting, and live demos.


What is Codex Sites?

The capability is currently presented as ChatGPT Sites (https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/sites) and can be used through Work or Codex in supported ChatGPT accounts.

Sites can help create, preview, refine, publish, and share interactive websites and lightweight applications without requiring a separate hosting workflow.

In this workshop, we will treat it as real software - not a magic landing-page generator.

That means defining:

  • The user and repeated problem

  • The core workflow

  • What data must persist

  • Product rules and permissions

  • Edge cases and failure states

  • What the agent must not change

  • How the result will be tested

  • When the app is actually ready to deploy


What you will build

Choose one focused build target.

1. Data-backed micro-app

Build a simple CRUD workflow with a small database and an admin or history view.

Possible ideas:

  • Volunteer shift manager

  • Equipment booking tracker

  • SME quotation follow-up board

  • Community event task manager

  • Student project approval workflow

2. API-powered dashboard

Fetch data from one external API, transform it, and turn it into a useful decision-making interface.

Possible ideas:

  • Public-data explorer

  • Grant and opportunity tracker

  • Local resource dashboard

  • Travel-planning tool

  • Content-performance monitor

3. File-to-insight tool

Upload a small CSV, text file, or document set and return a structured or actionable result.

Possible ideas:

  • Expense categoriser

  • Feedback analyser

  • Application triage tool

  • Document intake system

  • Simple reporting assistant

The goal is not to combine every idea.

The goal is to complete one useful workflow from start to finish.


What you will learn

During the session, you will learn how to:

  • Turn a vague product idea into a clear engineering-style prompt

  • Define the user, product rules, constraints, and acceptance criteria

  • Generate the first working application slice

  • Break a large implementation into smaller, verifiable stages

  • Connect persistent data using Sites or Supabase

  • Add an external REST API where relevant

  • Configure environment variables and secrets safely

  • Handle loading, empty, success, and error states

  • Test the actual application flow in the browser

  • Debug with precise reproduction steps

  • Review access and data handling before publishing

  • Save a reviewable version before deploying

  • Prepare and deliver a five-minute live product demo


What should be working by 9:00 PM?

Your mini-SaaS should ideally have:

  • One specific target user

  • One complete end-to-end workflow

  • Useful data that persists after refresh

  • At least one handled error or edge case

  • A responsive interface

  • No secrets committed into the source code

  • Synthetic or approved demonstration data

  • A saved and reviewed deployment version

  • A shareable URL

  • A five-minute demonstration

A smaller complete app is more valuable than five unfinished features.


Event agenda

6:30 PM - Arrival and check-in

Arrive early, set up your laptop, meet other builders, and confirm your build target.

7:00 PM - Dinner and builder matching

Solo builders may use this time to find collaborators or exchange early feedback.

7:30 PM - AI Tinkerers KL kickoff

Welcome, room briefing, and workshop expectations.

7:40 PM - Codex Sites live build

A concise walkthrough covering:

  • Product framing

  • Structured coding prompts

  • Sites workflow

  • Data and environment setup

  • Testing and deployment

8:00 PM - Guided build sprint

Participants build independently or in small teams, with organiser and volunteer support.

8:25 PM - Data, API, and QA checkpoint

Connect persistence, verify the primary workflow, and test failure states.

8:50 PM - Save, review, and deploy

Prepare a reviewable version, confirm access settings, and deploy the approved build.

9:00 PM - Attendee demos

Selected builders will present working products and share what others can reuse or avoid.

9:25 PM - Group photo and closing

9:30 PM - Event ends


Five-minute demo format

Builders selected to present should cover:

30 seconds - User and problem
Who is the product for, and what repeated problem does it address?

2 minutes - Live workflow
Show the user completing the core action.

45 seconds - Architecture
Explain what Sites, Supabase, storage, or an external API handled.

45 seconds - What broke
Share one bug, edge case, or incorrect assumption that had to be fixed.

30 seconds - Reusable lesson
Tell the room what another builder should copy or avoid.

The most valuable demo is not necessarily the most polished one. Show us what works, what failed, and what you learned.


Who this is for

This workshop is designed for:

  • Software developers and engineers

  • Technical founders

  • AI and machine-learning practitioners

  • Product designers who can work with code

  • Students actively building technical projects

  • Data professionals creating internal tools

  • Builders already experimenting with coding agents

  • People bringing a specific workflow they want to improve

Basic coding experience will help, but you do not need to be an expert.

You should be comfortable following technical instructions, reviewing generated code or application behaviour, and troubleshooting with support.


What to bring

Required:

  • Laptop and charger

  • Reliable browser

  • Latest ChatGPT desktop app or access to ChatGPT on the web

  • One focused product idea

  • Small synthetic sample data where relevant

A small comfort tip 🧥

We recommend bringing a light sweater, hoodie, or jacket just in case so you can stay comfortable while building.

Strongly recommended:

  • A free Supabase account

  • GitHub account

  • A public REST API selected in advance, if building an API dashboard

  • A small CSV or text file, if building a file-to-insight tool

  • LinkedIn, GitHub, X, or personal website added to your RSVP profile


Data and security guidance

For this workshop:

  • Use synthetic, public, or explicitly approved data

  • Do not upload real customer exports

  • Do not use protected health information

  • Do not use payment-card information

  • Do not paste API secrets into prompts or source files

  • Do not expose administrative or service-role keys in browser code

  • Keep a Site private while reviewing it

  • Confirm the intended audience before publishing

Participants remain responsible for the data, integrations, and third-party services used in their projects.

Space is limited and applications will be reviewed.

Submitting an application does not guarantee admission.

Potential Codex and Supabase build credits are currently subject to final partner confirmation, eligibility requirements, and physical event check-in.
