15 Years of the Istanbul Convention: Renewing Our Commitment to Women’s Rights
As the threat to women' rights rises across Europe, we are gathering to discuss the most vital shield against gender-based violence: the Istanbul Convention.
This panel discussion aims to address the growing challenges to women’s rights across Europe, with a particular focus on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention in the context of rising gender-based violence and political resistance. The discussion will explore existing legal and institutional gaps, as well as practical pathways to strengthen protection mechanisms and accountability at both EU and national levels.
The discussion will address, inter alia:
The current state of femicide and gender-based violence in Europe
Implementation gaps and political challenges related to the Istanbul Convention
The impact of non-ratification and withdrawal by certain states
Structural barriers, including underreporting, stigma, and lack of institutional response
Policy recommendations and advocacy strategies to strengthen enforcement and protection mechanisms
