About Event

Land acknowledgements have become common practice at meetings, events, and gatherings, but too often they're read once and forgotten, disconnected from any real commitment to Indigenous communities. This workshop is for organizations, teams, and individuals who want to move beyond the script and into meaningful action.

What we'll cover:

Why We Do Land Acknowledgements
We'll start with the history and purpose behind land acknowledgements: where the practice comes from, what it's meant to do, and the difference between acknowledgement as a genuine first step versus acknowledgement as a checkbox. We'll talk honestly about common critiques, including how land acks can become performative, and what it takes to make them mean something.

Examples in Practice
We'll look at real examples of organizations and institutions that have paired their land acknowledgements with concrete action: land-back initiatives, revenue-sharing agreements, hiring and partnership commitments, programming support, and other tangible ways groups have shown up for Indigenous communities and nations.

Brainstorm: What Could Your Org Do?
This is the heart of the workshop. In small groups, you'll work through a guided brainstorm to identify what your organization can realistically commit to, whether that's a giving partnership, volunteer support, policy change, hiring practice, or something else entirely. You'll leave with a concrete list of ideas tailored to your org's size, resources, and community.

Who should come:
Nonprofit staff, event organizers, educators, community leaders, and anyone responsible for their organization's public practices, especially if you've ever felt unsure whether your land acknowledgement is actually doing anything.

Bring your team:
Feel free to bring as many folks from your organization as you'd like. The brainstorm works best with multiple perspectives from the same org at the table. That said, if you have a larger group, it may be more cost-effective to book a private session for your organization specifically. Reach out and we can talk through options.
