Solving mysteries with SQL
This month we'll be learning how to solve mysteries with SQL.
SQL is a special language for communicating with databases using clear, readable commands. Well, fairly readable. And why would you have a database to begin with? Databases are used where the data is complex, interconnected, or just really massive beyond what can be held in a spreadsheet.
For example, Google's BigQuery database lets you work with tens of millions of rows of data with SQL. One of the biggest cryptocurrency analysis platforms uses SQL. And SQL is also the way you access some academic and statistical datasets. So it's a useful skill to have.
In this session we'll be following a tutorial that teaches you SQL concepts step-by-step as part of a story-based interactive game where you solve puzzles to figure out what’s going on. Along the way it covers how to select the data we need, join datasets together, and summarise it in ways that answers particular questions.
All of our events are suitable for beginners, and no programming experience is required. Bring a laptop along as this a practical, hands-on workshop. Please also sign up for a Dropbox account if you don't already have one so you can edit the shared doc we'll be using during the event.
