​“What if we all got together and bought it?”

​What started as a joke when Sotheby’s announced the auction of one of thirteen surviving original copies of the U.S. Constitution back in 2021 became a celebration with strangers coordinating across the internet. Seven days later, 17,500 people pooled $47 million. They lost the auction to hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin by less than $1 million. The community dissolved. The moment passed.

​Three months ago, Spirit Airlines stopped flying. That night, someone posted on TikTok: what if 250 million American adults each chipped in $45 and bought the airline back as a cooperative? Within twelve days, 371,552 people had pledged over $337 million.

​At a moment when many are losing faith in traditional institutions, moments like these show powerful ways that strangers can act together, in community.

​Join us on Tuesday, August 11th for a hands-on action lab to explore this question – “What if we all got together and bought it?”

​And how does this apply to our movements in NYC, the US, and globally?

​Led by Josh Nussbaum – Dear Crisis community member, founder of the Collective Capital Lab, and founder + former CEO of the Movement Cooperative – this Action Lab is a process of thinking how we can apply this to the issues and movements we care about through building momentum with existing ideas, brainstorming new ideas, and exploring how the Dear Crisis community might collectively surface collective capital opportunities.
