🦐The Annual Shrimp Protest (unofficial)
On the eve of EA Global London, join us for the first anniversary of The Annual Shrimp Protest®
During last year's edition over 70 animal advocates sent a powerful message to Tesco: shrimp matter!
Fast forward one year and not only Tesco, but the majority of UK supermarkets have committed to stop cutting shrimps eyes off and suffocating them to death.
What: A shrimp protest!
When: Friday, June 6 · 4-6 PM
Where: Meet in front of the EAG venue (Intercontinental hotel at The O2). Protest at this Iceland store: 210-218 Trafalgar Rd, London SE10 9ER, United Kingdom
Who: International Council for Animal Welfare
Why we protest
Shrimp (also known as prawns) may be the most farmed species on earth, with ~ 440 bn individuals killed each year. There's a lot of things going wrong with how they are farmed; we demand supermarkets ban two of the most horrific practices:
Stop cutting mother shrimps' eyes off: female breeder shrimp often have one eyestalk removed, to increase their egg-laying output. Just... stop doing that.
Stop suffocating shrimps to death: while most supermarkets madate that all animals need to be properly stunned before slaughter, the reality looks starkly different: ineffective 'ice-slurry' stunning leads to many shrimps suffocating while fully conscious. The alternative: Electrical stunning promises to render animals unconscious immediately.
Since April '25 the UK discount supermarket Iceland Foods has been the target of a public campaign by the International Council for Animal Welfare. After two months of pressure, their Chairman Richard Walker just admitted that eyestalk ablation is happening in their supply chain. However, they are yet to commit to a timeline to end these practices.
Our protest can show them that these are issues people care about and that they need to publish a plan to end them! More infos on the campaign and background at https://www.icelandprawns.co.uk/
