How We Dine Is How We Live — Swahili Dinner: Flavours from the Comoros Islands

How We Dine Is How We Live is a cultural dinner series by Socialoftas, where people gather to experience cultures through food, stories, and shared presence.

On April 24th, we travel to the Comoros Islands, through a Swahili dinner inspired by the flavours of the Indian Ocean — fragrant, generous, and shaped by centuries of exchange between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

This evening is also a very personal one. Comorian cuisine is rooted in hospitality, celebration, and community — where food is never just food, but part of a wider cultural rhythm.

Dinner Menu

Entrance
Traditional bread served with a homemade sauce

Main Course
Coconut rice
Cassava leaves sauce cooked with coconut milk
Vegetarian option and meat option available

Served with:

Mango Anchar (Amchar) — a spicy, pickled condiment made from green mangoes, aromatic spices, garlic, and hot peppers.

Rougail — a fresh tomato-and-onion relish that brings brightness and balance to the dish.

Dessert
Traditional tea
Traditional homemade cake

Cultural Workshop — Comorian Wedding (Anda)

As part of the evening, we will host a short presentation of the Comorian cultural wedding (Anda) — one of the most important traditions in the Comoros Islands.

The Comoros is also known for being a matrilineal society, where women traditionally hold a central role in family, inheritance, and social life. The Grand Marriage (Anda) reflects this unique cultural structure and remains a powerful symbol of community and belonging.

During the evening, we will enact the Ukumbi, an important moment within the Comorian wedding tradition. The Ukumbi, recognized as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, celebrates community, colour, and collective joy.

To make this moment as close as possible to the spirit of celebration, we warmly invite you to come dressed in one of your best colourful outfits. This will be a joyful and immersive way to experience Comorian culture together.

How We Dine Is How We Live dinners are about more than food.
They are about gathering, slowing down, and creating a space where cultures are shared in a warm and respectful atmosphere.
