World premiere and celebration: Khosha: The New Land

LDNDOCS closes this year with a day dedicated to Indigenous rights, and the world premiere of Khosha: The New Land is the closing film, a RandomGood Films production.

A journey to the past to find the future.

Moved into centralised government villages, eight Khwe set out on a long journey back to Khosha, their ancestral land in north-west Botswana, hoping to live by their traditions again. They find it under pressure from poachers. But their guide, an elder who talks with the animals, makes them a promise: care for the land, and the animals will return. He will not be there to see it.

Trailer:

The story didn’t end when the cameras stopped. Since filming, the community has formed its own legal entity, Tc’Oca Reserve, and is preparing a lease application for its ancestral land. The work to secure Khosha is happening right now.

“If successful, Khosha would be a landmark for Indigenous land rights in Africa: a community securing and caring for its own ancestral land, and a precedent for others across the continent and the world.” — Gakemotho Satau, Director
