The Letter of the Law in J.E. Casely Hayford's West Africa: A conversation with Jeanne-Marie Jackson
Jeanne-Marie Jackson (Johns Hopkins University) and Gus Casely-Hayford (V&A East) join Doyle D. Calhoun (University of Cambridge) for a conversation on Jackson’s latest book, The Letter of the Law in J. E. Casely Hayford’s West Africa (Princeton University Press, 2026). In this revisionist account, Jackson positions the life and work of liberal anticolonialist and Cambridge alumnus J. E. Casely Hayford as an intriguing case study of anticolonial literature and politics. Jackson is hereby the first to devote a whole book to the career and throught of anglophone West Africa’s most important early twentieth-century statesman and intellectual.
Following the talk, a drinks reception, sponsored by the Peterhouse Development Office, will be held in the adjacent Lubbock Room.
