Book Club: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Wuthering Heights is back in the cultural conversation and we are reading it with fresh eyes and a little healthy skepticism.
Emily Brontë’s ferocious and singular novel has re entered the zeitgeist, debated online, revived through a recent film rerelease, and newly questioned for its portrayal of love, obsession, and emotional violence. Is this a love story worth celebrating or one that demands interrogation? Why does Heathcliff still haunt us? And what does its enduring popularity say about how we understand love, power, and emotional harm today?
Rather than approaching Wuthering Heights as a sweeping romance, we will explore it as a psychological and cultural text. One that complicates devotion, possession, power, and harm, and refuses easy answers.
This conversation will be guided in partnership with Bonding Over Books, a thoughtfully designed card game created by a lifelong book lover to keep book club discussions focused, meaningful, and genuinely fun. Their prompts invite readers to connect more deeply with both the book and one another, which feels especially fitting for a novel that sparks such strong reactions and interpretations.
We will gather at the moody, candlelit Temple Bar for an intimate discussion in a setting perfectly suited to Brontë’s stormy world.
