Transcribe Harper [Pizza] Party
Free and open to the public, RSVP required.
Looking for an accessible way to address the assaults on history taking place all around the country? Join us for a transcription party, where we’ll take on small tasks to preserve and amplify an essential voice from our past.
In 2025, the Center for Black Digital Research/#DigBlk facilitated cross-country commemorations of the 200th birthday of legendary author and activist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (1825-1911): #Harper200. As part of the series, organizers launched Transcribe Harper, a project aimed at connecting Harper’s work to a wide audience.
Transcribe Harper invites anyone to contribute to the larger project of preserving Frances E.W. Harper’s remarkable legacy. Participants transcribe individual documents (poems, essays, letters, fiction, commentary) one-by-one, eventually creating a collection of writing by and about Harper that is fully searchable and freely accessible online.
Bring curiosity and your own laptop for typing; we’ll bring some background on Harper and the work she’s inspired, tech guidance, and the pizza (gluten-free and gluten-full). Together, we’ll share a common purpose and camaraderie.
Co-hosted by Aku Ammah-Tagoe (The Ruby), Christie George (Togethering Lab, The Ruby), and Jessi Haley (Cita Press). Learn more about Harper and the larger project in the Cita Press Bulletin. Contact [email protected] for questions.
