Ballot Initiatives for Systemic Change: Past, Present, & Future
Our political system is currently broken. Our politicians cannot be trusted to implement policies which are in the average citizen's best interests, and while some astute politicians are beginning to talk about these issues, it will take more than a few good elected representatives to effectively reform the political establishment.
Ballot initiatives (also known as "ballot propositions" or "ballot measures") offer an alternative strategy to deliver political change. Rather than electing representatives to vote on our behalf, a system which can work but is currently rife with issues, citizens have the opportunity to vote directly on the policies that their government will be legally obligated to uphold.
Join me for a virtual presentation and discussion on the history of ballot initiatives, present-day ballot initiative examples, and a vision of how ballot initiatives may be used in the future. I will also cover some of the practical details of ballot initiatives—how do they come into being, how much do they cost, what are the necessary ingredients to win?
Please invite anyone you think will be interested. I will share relevant materials with all attendees after the fact.
