Self-defence Session
Empowerment self-defence (ESD) is an education system that teaches practical safety skills, boundary-setting and confidence-building through five core principles: think (awareness), yell (voice), run (create distance), fight (take action), tell (get support).
Who is it for?
Students of all genders who want to learn verbal and physical self-defence techniques in a supportive group environment. LGBTQ+ inclusive. No previous experience of martial arts required.
What to expect?
This 90-minute class will blend movement, discussion and martial arts-based technique (palm heel strike + knee strike).
ESD emphasises awareness, de-escalation, and proportionality and there will be opportunities to practice this in the context of games and physical activities.
Expect some conversation and to spend time on topics like boundaries and confidence, not just physical moves. You’ll be encouraged to work with your own nervous system states with grounding techniques used throughout.
ESD classes are committed to being trauma-informed so everything will be optional/invitational, not instructional or demanded.
