Social Studies: The Sleeping Brain
βProfessors, experts, and storytellers giving thought-provoking lectures in unexpected places around Waco.
βπ Date: November 12
βπ Lecture: The Sleeping Brain
βπ€ Speaker: Dr. Michael Scullin
βπ Location: The Baylor Club
βWe spend roughly a third of our lives asleep, yet most of us have only a vague idea of what our brains are actually doing during those hours. We know sleep matters, but why? And what happens when we consistently get too little of it?
βJoin us for an evening with Dr. Michael Scullin, Baylor University professor and sleep researcher, as we explore the science behind one of the most essential parts of being human.
βWhy does sleep affect our memory, mood, focus, and overall well-being? What common beliefs about sleep hold up to scientific scrutiny, and which ones deserve a second look? And what can we actually do to get better rest?
βIn The Sleeping Brain, Scullin will take us inside the sleeping brain, separate myths from reality, and explain what research reveals about the relationship between sleep and how we think, feel, and function when we're awake.
βYou won't need a neuroscience degree to follow along. Drawing on his research and experience communicating science to public audiences, Scullin will share practical, evidence-based strategies for improving sleep quality, including changes you can start making tonight.
βDr. Michael Scullin is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, where he directs the Sleep Neuroscience and Cognition Laboratory. His research examines how sleep influences memory, learning, and cognitive performance, as well as ways to help people develop healthier sleep habits.
βCome curious, leave better informed, and maybe rethink that late-night scroll.
