🧑🏼🏫 About Our Speaker 📰
Bethany Allen is an award-winning journalist based in Taiwan covering geoeconomics, trade, foreign policy, and technology across the Indo-Pacific.
She is the author of Beijing Rules: How China Weaponized Its Economy to Confront the World (HarperCollins), named an FT Best Book of 2023.
A former China reporter at Axios, her investigations — including revealing the playbook for running mass detention camps in Xinjiang, a suspected Chinese spy linked to Congress, a University of Minnesota student jailed in China for Tweets he made while abroad, and Zoom’s censorship at Beijing’s behest — have shaped national and global debate.
Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, and The Atlantic, and she has been featured on NPR, CNN, and the BBC among many others.
She holds a master’s degree in East Asian studies from Yale University and a graduate certificate from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Nanjing Center. She previously lived in China for four years and is fully fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
