About Event

Canada's Muslim community faces a paradox: Muslims are twice as likely as the general population to hold a post-secondary degree, yet three times more likely to live in poverty, and represent 11% of affordable housing residents while making up only 5% of the population.

Consider Sarah, a mother in an abusive household who is also caring for her aging parents. She wants to leave, but shelters won't accommodate her whole family. Her choices are to abandon her parents, leave her children behind, or stay. None of these are real options — and her story reflects a gap that existing systems aren't built to close.

The Muslim Philanthropy Network is convening this session to look at how halal-compliant capital can help fill that gap. We'll discuss the Halal Affordable Housing Investment Fund (HalalFund.ca), developed in partnership with SVX, one of Canada's leading impact investment firms, and now funding construction on its first project: 264 bedrooms in Edmonton designed for larger and extended families.

This conversation is for anyone thinking about how the Muslim philanthropic sector sustains itself over the long term — donors, halal-compliant impact investors, organizations exploring stable halal cash management, and community leaders interested in what a shariah-compliant investment vehicle can do at scale.

Topics we'll cover:

  • How halal investment structures work for social impact funds

  • What sustainable, faith-aligned capital means for the long-term health of Muslim philanthropy

  • The housing case study: how HalalFund.ca structures philanthropic capital, impact investment, and cash management side by side

  • IslamicFamily's four decades of frontline social service work and what it reveals about unmet need

We'd love for you to be part of the conversation.
