Women & Guns, A Complicated & Changing Relationship
Focusing on Domestic and Intimate Partner Violence
America’s gun conversation typically centers on men’s experiences (perhaps unsurprising, since men account for 86% of all firearm deaths), but American women are a crucial part of the conversation. 61% of women who died due to gun violence were killed by a current or former intimate partner, compared with just 6% of men. Among firearm homicide victims, women are 10 times more likely than men to have been killed by an intimate partner. In acknowledgement of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, our panelists will explore this troubling pattern and what policy and systems we can implement to reduce those numbers.
In Women and Guns: A Complicated and Changing Relationship, we explore the unique ways that women interact with firearms (in both legal and illicit ways), the unique challenges they face within the legal system, and what we know about their rates of firearm injury.
