Thousands of years ago, this very landscape was home to the major indigenous settlement of Genga. We will learn to "read" the terrain, discover how ancient communities utilized local ecosystems, and trace the history of the Santa Ana River watershed.
🧭 What We’ll Experience:
The Living Landscape: Walk the ancient mesa and look down at the historic river floodplains.
History Beneath Our Feet: Spot ancient shell fragments (middens) along the paths, dating back thousands of years.
The Wetlands Ecosystem: Descend into the restored wetlands to see the native tule reeds and willow used for building traditional kiicha homes.

📍 Meeting Point: East Entrance trail head on Tanager Dr (Residential area entrance). GPS Address: 2401 Tanager Dr, Costa Mesa, CA 92626
🏃♂️ Difficulty: Easy to Moderate. Includes unpaved dirt trails and a flight of stairs. Approx. 2 miles.
👟 What to Bring: Closed-toe walking shoes (trails are dusty), water, a hat, and a light jacket (it gets windy near the bluffs).Space is limited to keep our group discussions impactful.
