​Social media and the widespread use of AI have transformed how teens experience crushes, dating, and breakups, often in ways their parents never anticipated. Ghosting. Situationships. The Dump Text. The dating recession. AI companions standing in for real connection. Digital life connects teens as never before, yet it also breeds misinterpretation and social isolation.

​Lisa A. Phillips, the author of First Love: Guiding Teens Through Relationships and Heartbreak, draws on the latest research to illuminate how teen relationships today differ dramatically from those of their parents’ generation—and how technology, social media, mental health, and the rise of AI are at the center of that shift.

​Parents will leave with concrete, research-backed strategies to guide their teens through the highs and lows of relationships, building the emotional intelligence and social skills they'll need both online and off and fostering their development into caring, self-aware adults.

​ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

​Lisa A. Phillips is the author of First Love: Guiding Teens through Relationships and Heartbreak. Her insights on teen relationships have been featured on NPR, the TEDx stage, and on a wide range of podcasts and broadcast outlets. She has written about relationships, mental health, and teens for The New York Times, OprahDaily, The Washington Post, Globe Magazine, Longreads, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, and other outlets. She teaches journalism and the popular Love and Heartbreak seminar at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She is the author of two previous books: Unrequited: The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Romantic Obsession and Public Radio: Behind the Voices. She lives in New York’s Hudson Valley.

​The Common Ground Speaker Series presents distinguished speakers in education, parenting, and health at venues across the San Francisco Peninsula. Our 2026-2027 Series will be a hybrid season with some events online and some in person. Parents, faculty, and staff at our member schools attend the Common Ground online events free of charge. Faculty and educators from non-member schools are also invited to participate free of charge. Guests from non-member schools and the general community can register and attend. Each attendee must register individually. Registration closes 12 hours before the start of this event or when the maximum registration capacity is reached.

​Guests from non-member schools and the general community can register and attend this in-person event for a fee. Please select the "NON-MEMBER $10.00" ticket option.

​We also welcome educators from member and nonmember schools to attend our events free of charge.  However, we'd like to get a better understanding of our audience and interests, and request that you register with your work / school .edu email address.  Educators must be employees of accredited educational institutions.
