The Most Neglected Problem? Wild Animal Welfare π¦π
βJoin EA Netherlands for a wild animal welfare discussion evening where you can explore one of the most neglected problems in effective altruism and discover what you can actually do about it.
βWhy should you care?
βThere are an estimated 10Β²ΒΉ individual wild animals on Earth at any given time β many of whom experience pain and pleasure just like the animals we already work to protect in the food industry. And yet there are very few initiatives aimed at improving their lives β it's estimated that less than $10 million USD per year is spent on addressing this problem.
βWhile tractability is a challenge, the scale and neglectedness more than compensate for it. This could be one of the most pressing problems of our time, and yet most of us β myself included β know remarkably little about it. That needs to change, which is exactly why we're hosting this event. π
βAbout the speaker
βLaura wrote her master's thesis on welfare biology in rewilding projects and will be giving a talk covering what wild animal welfare is, why it matters, and what we can actually do about it. We'll also touch on some deeper questions the topic raises β including insect welfare, net negative lives in the wild, and the ethics of rewilding. Afterwards, there will be a Q&A, breakout rooms, and a group discussion.
