About Event

What happens when faith and freedom pull in opposite directions?

Democracy promises freedom. But what happens when religious communities, using that freedom, promote values that contradict liberal norms — like gender equality, freedom of expression, or LGBTQ rights? Should democracies tolerate illiberal beliefs in the name of pluralism? Or should certain values be non-negotiable, even if that means policing faith?

Core Questions:

  1. Should liberal democracies ever restrict religious practices that contradict human rights norms?
(Burqas, arranged marriages, blasphemy laws — are these cultural or coercive?)

  2. Is it possible to have a truly pluralist society — or must some values always take priority?
    (Can liberalism tolerate the intolerant?)

  3. Do religious communities have a duty to adapt to democratic norms — or does democracy have a duty to accommodate them?
(Who bends: the state, or the sacred?)
