About Event

Capacity is not fixed. It shifts daily, and most of us only notice the change well after it has started to affect our work.

Fliss Hoyle, founder of Lived Experience Inspires, joins us at Hub8 MX for three short workshops on burnout, capacity and sustainable functioning. Each session runs 30 minutes, with around 20 minutes of content and 10 minutes for questions, reflection and interaction.

About Fliss Hoyle

Fliss Hoyle is the founder of Lived Experience Inspires and a speaker, educator and consultant. Her work combines more than 25 years of lived experience of serious physical and mental ill health with evidence and practical education.

Fliss has trained students, health professionals and workplace teams through her own work and alongside organisations including Mind and Mental Health First Aid. She has contributed to healthcare education at universities across the country and is also an Associate Consultant with the Royal College of Nursing.

Through Lived Experience Inspires, Fliss helps people and organisations move beyond awareness by developing a more practical understanding of mental health, capacity and sustainable functioning.

The three build one story across the day, moving from noticing to understanding to acting, but each one works on its own. Register for the sessions you want using the ticket options below, or choose All Three Sessions to attend the full series.

Session one: The Truth About Burnout

10:00, 30 minutes. Recognising when the way we're functioning starts to change.

Fliss uses lived experience to bring the human reality of burnout to life, and to show that changes in capacity and functioning can often be noticed before things reach crisis or overload. Drawing on her own experience of functioning under sustained pressure, Fliss then broadens the conversation to the workplace: life demands, health, environment, cognitive load and the fact that what we can realistically manage changes.

The interaction asks what affects your capacity, and what you notice when you are reaching yours.

Key takeaway: capacity is not fixed. It shifts daily.

Session two: Awareness Is Not Enough

13:15, 30 minutes. Why understanding matters if we want things to change.

We have more awareness and conversation around workplace mental health than ever, yet poor mental health continues to have a significant impact on people and organisations. This session looks at the gap between knowing mental health matters and being able to put that awareness into practice. Fliss explores the workplace evidence before looking at why understanding our own capacity, cognitive load, life demands and what affects how we function matters too.

The interaction asks what helps you function at your best, and what gets in the way.

Key takeaway: awareness matters, but understanding ourselves gives us more opportunity to respond effectively.

Session three: Before the Cup Overflows

15:00, 30 minutes. Recognise earlier. Respond earlier. Better outcomes.

The final session moves from awareness into practical action. If we can understand our capacity, recognise when our life load is increasing and notice the signs earlier, we have more opportunity to make adjustments before reaching overload.

Fliss introduces a short taster of The Cup Method™, a practical visual framework for understanding capacity, life load and the balance between what we are carrying and what we can realistically manage. Participants will explore some of the different demands that affect capacity and how recognising changes earlier can help us respond differently and make more realistic decisions.

The interaction applies a small part of the method: what is filling your cup, and what could help create more space?

Key takeaway: recognise earlier, respond differently, and make realistic decisions based on demands and available capacity.

How the three sessions connect

Burnout is the human experience, and what can happen when demands exceed what we can realistically manage. Awareness is why knowing that mental health matters is not enough on its own. Prevention is how understanding capacity and life load helps people recognise and respond earlier. The thread runs from lived experience to understanding to practical application.

Open to all Hub8 members across MX and GC. Spaces are limited, so please register for the sessions you would like to attend.
