A Foster Alum's Perspective on Growing Wealth
Join us for the first-ever Kiro Money workshop specifically for foster youth and alumni! While this session is curated for those with lived experience in the foster care system, anyone who wants to build their financial knowledge is more than welcome to join us.
For many foster youth and alumni, managing money is rarely taught in school or at home, making it feel like you’ve missed out on a "head start" that everyone else was handed. This live session is all about breaking down those barriers. We’re going to cover the essential foundations for growing your wealth-from managing your current income to growing savings—so you can feel prepared for whatever comes next.
The session will be led by Sara Ellis, Community Manager for Kiro Money. Having navigated these systems herself, as well as being a young adult in the current world, Sara is an expert at translating financial jargon into simple, bite-sized educational information that actually makes sense for your life right now.
Kiro Money is a platform built to help Gen Z and young adults gain control of their finances through clear education and simple tools. This is a 100% judgment-free space. No question is too basic, and you don’t need any prior experience or a certain amount of money in the bank to attend. Just bring your questions and a notepad!
What we’ll dive into:
The Emergency Fund: Why this is your ultimate safety net and how to start one.
High-Yield Savings (HYSA): How to make your money grow just by sitting in the right account.
Smart Budgeting: How to track your money without it feeling like a second job.
Account Basics: A simple breakdown of Checking vs. Savings vs. High-Yield Savings Accounts
Avoiding Traps: How to open accounts safely and dodge the predatory fees.
We’ll wrap things up with a live Q&A with Sara!
