About Event

How do I pursue a career that’s not only successful but also meaningful?

You'll spend roughly 80,000 hours working over your lifetime — more than you'll spend on almost anything else. For many of us, that makes our career one of the biggest opportunities we have to have a positive impact. But figuring out how to actually do that isn't easy.

Whether you're a student figuring out where to start, or a professional wondering if it's time for a change, join us for an evening exploring how to use your career as a force for good!

First we'll hear from someone who's walked the path: Joachim Verheyen, co-founder of Impact Unfiltered, will share his journey from production engineer and sustainability consultant to policy entrepreneur — a transition sparked by the School for Moral Ambition (SMA) started by Rutger Bregman (author of Moral Ambition, Humankind / De Meeste Mensen Deugen and Utopia for Realists). Through Impact Unfiltered, Joachim is advocating for better EU tobacco legislation. He'll share insights on his personal career pivot and his experience as an SMA fellow.

Afterwards, we’ll have a presentation and Q&A with Tim Jansen of Probably Good — a nonprofit that offers free career guidance and 1:1 advising to people wanting to move into impactful jobs. He’ll be able to answer all your practical questions on networks to join, job boards to follow, resources to read, … Tim previously worked at Amnesty International and the UN, so he also has plenty of real-world experience to share.

It will be a casual evening in a relaxed living-room-style setting with a bar and plenty of space to mingle. After the talks we'll open up the room for questions and conversation over drinks — including the chance to chat with Joachim and others who've made this type of transition recently. We look forward to hosting you!

Doors open at 19:30 for drinks and mingling. We start promptly at 20:00.

Interested in going deeper?

Vinoy from EA Ghent is starting a Moral Ambition Circle right here in Ghent — an 8-session peer-led programme where a small group explores what impact means to them and maps out their own path. If you're curious, this evening is a perfect opportunity to learn more.

Want even more?

Just days after our event, the EA Summit: Brussels takes place on Saturday 7 February at Flagey — a full day of talks, workshops, and discussions for professionals exploring how their skills can tackle the world's most pressing problems. Applications are open now.

This event is part of a quarterly series hosted by Effective Altruism Ghent (you might remember our recent evening on effective giving!).

Effective altruism is a global movement that asks a simple question: How can we use our time, money, and resources to help others as much as possible? Rather than just doing what feels good, effective altruists aim to do what does the most good using reason, evidence, and compassion.

EA Ghent is part of Effective Altruism Belgium, a nonprofit building a community of people dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing problems.

Learn more at eabelgium.org, join our WhatsApp community to meet others in the movement, or subscribe to our monthly newsletter to stay updated on events, opportunities, and EA news.
