Book Presentation: Ground Rules by Alejandro Cartagena
Followed by the gallery’s annual celebratory brunch
Ground Rules is the first comprehensive, fully bilingual survey of the work of acclaimed photographer Alejandro Cartagena. Known for seminal photobooks such as Carpoolers (2014) and A Small Guide to Homeownership (2020), Cartagena has built a practice defined by formally rigorous and socially incisive images addressing suburban sprawl, the politics of the US–Mexico border, and widening economic disparities across North America.
The publication brings together documentary photography, collage, appropriated vernacular imagery, and AI-generated works, all unified by Cartagena’s sharp visual language and his ability to approach Mexico’s most urgent social and environmental issues with both humor and pathos.
Published to coincide with Cartagena’s mid-career solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, on view from November 2025 through May 2026.
Following the presentation, guests are invited to join the gallery’s annual celebratory brunch.
