About Event

Sometimes AI writes some really bad code, aka "slop".

This free workshop series is a highly collaborative, interactive, and I dare say fun way to figure out why (and how to fix it) together.

IMPORTANT: This is a four-part series

The workshop series is in four parts across four weeks:

  • Part 1: Knowledge Sharing [Wed, January 21st]

  • Part 2: AI at the Planning Stage [Tue, January 27th]

  • Part 3: AI at the Implementation Stage [Wed, February 4th]

  • Part 4: AI at the Review & Deployment Stages [Wed, February 11th]

Please only sign up if you can attend all four!

Description

I'll share a bit about what I know, but largely we'll be leveraging our collective knowledge in a series of fast-paced and intense activities. These activities are designed to help us collectively put the puzzle pieces together about what works with AI and what doesn't when it comes to the software development lifecycle. And then, we put it to the test.

Although I don't (and can't) know everything we'll get out of it, I can guarantee you'll learn:

  • what parts of the Software Development Lifecycle are suitable to help from AI

  • where the biggest shortcomings are with AI (and how to mitigate them)

  • how you can actually speed up development with AI (and measure it)

And here's what you'll be doing:

  • connecting with other like-minded engineers in the community who are interested in how AI can help with work

  • sharing your knowledge and experience

  • collaborating with others to build something cool using an AI-assisted workflow

By signing up for this event, you are confirming you can come to all four parts of the workshop!

Who is this for?

tl;dr: Software engineers at any level.

Seats are limited, and I am looking to get a mix of more junior and more senior software engineers (or adjacent engineering roles; e.g. DevOps, Data Engineering, etc.) with a mixture of experience with AI.

If you aren't sure if you're qualified, apply anyway. I'll let you know by EOD January 19th if you've been accepted.

Who is putting it on?

I'm Jared Porcenaluk, a software engineer across multiple stacks for (checks watch) fifteen years, and recent AI Master's grad from the University of Galway, and I'll be facilitating.

This workshop series could not be possible without the support from the PorterShed (they are generously allowing us use of the space and support in the background) and Sarah Porcenaluk (educator extraordinaire, who has made all the difference on the curriculum).

What will I need?

A laptop (Mac, PC, Linux - we're agnostic) and curiosity.

Sponsors

The PorterShed is graciously hosting us, giving us both a space and support behind the scenes. If you see any PorterShed staff at the event, thank them!

This event is also sponsored by the Oifig Fiontair Áitiúil Gaillimhe (Local Enterprise Office Galway). They provides a range of services and supports to help you start or grow your own business.

And finally the Western Development Commission, who empowers Western Ireland's growth through community support, business investment, and strategic regional planning for a sustainable future.
