The Empty Chair: Power, Voice & Participation in Growth
Every strategy room has invisible participants.
The community whose story is used but never consulted.
The junior team member whose idea gets passed upward without credit.
The workers affected by a supply chain claim.
The child inheriting the climate consequences of today's growth strategy.
The people excluded because they lacked title, language, confidence, access, or power.
And then there's the quieter kind of absence. The person who was in the room but stayed silent because the initiatives and tasks kept growing, and nobody was really asking. The team that knew something was wrong but didn't have the language for it yet. The moment when someone almost said we don't need more of this, but didn't.
This Playground makes space for the empty chair. Together, we'll explore how participation changes decisions, ethics, culture, and legitimacy, and what it costs when growth happens to people rather than with them.
Together, we'll ask:
Who is usually absent when growth strategies are approved?
Whose voices are welcomed only after decisions are already made?
What harm happens when representation replaces participation?
How do power dynamics shape what gets called "strategic consensus"?
What would responsible growth look like if those most impacted had real say?
How do we build integrity into decision-making, not just the values statement?
Tensions We're Challenging
The gap between inclusion and participation is wider than most organisations want to admit. The inclusion theatre (where diverse faces appear in imagery while decision-making power stays concentrated at the top) is not the same as governance that reflects the people most affected by the decisions being made. Seniority gets mistaken for wisdom. Stories and labour get extracted without consent or credit. Strategy rooms become detached from lived reality. It's not always the result of bad intent, rather it's the structures that consistently reward the loudest, most senior, most familiar voices in the room.
What We're Reimagining
The alternative starts with treating participation as a design principle, not an afterthought. Strategies co-created with the communities they involve. Cultures where authorship is shared and credit is given fairly. Decision-making that is accountable across generations, not just quarters. Governance built around integrity rather than just compliance. And a broader understanding of growth as something democratic and something that belongs to the people it touches, not only to those with the title to approve it.
Key Outcomes
An honest picture of who is typically missing from growth decisions and what that absence is actually costing in terms of trust, legitimacy, creativity, and impact.
Encounter practical approaches to participatory organisational design and community-informed strategy
Practical frameworks for thinking about power, voice, and accountability that go beyond diversity representation into governance reform.
Why Attend
If you've ever sat in a strategy room and noticed who wasn't there, felt invisible yourself, or been the person whose perspective arrived too late to change anything, this Playground is for you. This is a conversation for people who believe that how decisions get made is just as important as what gets decided, and want to explore what it looks like to build organisations where the people most affected by growth have a say in how it happens.
Who This Is For
Leaders, founders, and strategists who want to build organisations where participation is structural rather than symbolic. It's for people working on governance, culture, and organisational design who are ready to go beyond inclusion as imagery. It's for changemakers, community practitioners, and anyone who has felt the cost of being consulted after the fact and want to help build something more honest and more accountable in its place.

WHAT PAST PARTICIPANTS HAD TO SAY
"A stimulating “safe place” to share, be heard, listen and learn. Plenty of people from different perspectives to shake up the conversation and create learning opportunities." - Gwyn Jones
"I felt truly inspired after this session! 😍 Thank you for creating these spaces to connect with leaders who are rethinking business models. It really shifted my perspective on the responsibility we have as marketers to remain transparent and true to the core essence of our businesses. I loved hearing the diverse perspectives and exploring new approaches to driving meaningful change. This conversation genuinely opened my eyes! I’m excited to continue learning and connecting with others who share this vision." - Michelle Guzman Murphy
"This was a refreshing discussion! I found the speakers had developed insights that were very inspirational. I love when people are willing to share their discoveries willingly and open to further development of it all. So often people are working with a surface perspective. The self awareness in this group was obvious to me and I think this is so much more productive moving forward in the complexity of today's world. None of this is easy to navigate. Thanks for the invite. Lots of food for thought!" - Patti Beer
About Zebra Growth
Zebra Growth is a Responsible Growth Consultancy helping organisations close the gap between what they say, how they grow, and what they stand for, so their next stage becomes clearer, more coherent, and more resilient.
We work with organisations doing meaningful, complex work whose story, systems, and decisions haven't fully caught up with who they're becoming. Whether growth has started to strain or a new opportunity has opened up, we help leadership see what's actually out of sync and build the conditions for growth that can hold.
Our methodology, Responsible Growth Architecture™, diagnoses the gap between three things that drift apart more often than most organisations want to admit: Story — how people understand and trust you; Growth — how your value turns into traction, revenue, funding, and opportunity; and Integrity — how you make decisions and stay true to what matters as pressure increases. When these three are aligned, growth becomes clearer and more durable. When they drift, it becomes heavier, slower, and harder to trust.
Founded from lived experience across contrasting worlds —from wealth and war to capitalism and community — Zebra Growth is grounded in a clear insight: more activity rarely fixes a story that no longer fits. The real work is beneath the surface. It is the story, systems, and decision-making conditions that make growth possible in the first place.
We are intentionally cross-functional and cross-cultural, bringing together strategists, creatives, and technologists who understand what it means to grow without losing what made the work worth doing.
Zebra Growth's vision is simple: to help organisations grow without losing the thing that made them credible in the first place, and to contribute to a future where growth strengthens rather than extracts from the people, cultures, and ecosystems it touches.
