About Event

Our guest is Dr. Matthaeus Schwarz-Schilling, synthetic biologist at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and co-founder and Chief Science Officer of a university spinoff. His work sits at the bottom-up end of biology: building functioning biological machinery out of individual molecular components instead of modifying living cells. PhD at TU Munich, postdoc at the Weizmann Institute, now back in Germany on a DFG return fellowship. His 2025 paper in Nature Communications produced, cell free, all thirty proteins of the machinery that makes proteins.

One hour, live. Matthaeus brings a real problem, unsolved, and nobody on the show has seen it. Stephen hears it for the first time on air and works it in the open until there's a method to take away.

If you're here to listen, you don't have to speak and there's nothing to prepare. Staying muted the entire time is completely ok.
