Logos Circle Zanzibar
Join us for a special Logos Circle gathering in Zanzibar as we visit Straight Training Centre, an English evening school in Fuoni, Mambosasa, Zanzibar.
Founded 12 years ago by a Zanzibarian named Modest, the school began when he started teaching children in his neighbourhood English for free. What started as a small volunteer initiative has grown into an impressive community project with more than 200 students and around 12 teachers — all of whom were former students themselves.
The school supports children and teenagers aged 5–18 and is entirely volunteer-run. We’ll spend the evening meeting the students, seeing the school in action, and helping with a small piece of work that can have a lasting impact.
Agenda
18:00 — Meet at the Fumba Town security enrance
We’ll meet at the parking area and organise taxis/cars based on the number of people who have registered.
18:30 — Arrive at Straight Training Centre
We’ll visit the school, starting with the teenagers and then visiting the building where the younger children study.
English reading with the kids
We’ll spend some time with the students and take part in English reading and activities.
Help create fundraising content
The school is currently raising funds to build its own building. For years, paying rent has been one of the biggest challenges and a recurring point of failure for the project.
During our visit, we’ll also help create a short video that can be used to support their fundraising efforts and tell more people about the work they are doing.

We expect to arrive back in Fumba Town at approximately 21:00.
Why this project matters
Straight Training Centre is a great example of what local initiative can achieve. One person started teaching children for free, former students became teachers, and the project has grown into a school serving hundreds of young people — without relying on a conventional institutional structure.
There are also practical ways we can continue supporting them after the visit. They are currently fundraising for their own school building, and they would benefit from help with video production, photography, website development, promotional materials, and fundraising. They are also currently in need of a new whiteboard.

Practical information
Meeting time: 18:30 at the Fumba Town entrance security point
Return to Fumba Town: approximately 21:30
Taxi: 10,000 TZS for the return journey
Please bring 10,000 Tanzanian shillings with you for the taxi.
Please also dress respectfully according to local Zanzibarian culture: shoulders, knees and belly should be covered.
Please reserve your place in advance so that we can organise the right number of cars/taxis.
