About Event

This Earth Day weekend, we're slowing down and letting the birds come to us.

Join the Feminist Bird Club DMV Chapter for a late afternoon bird sit at Rock Creek Park. What’s a bird sit? A bird sit is exactly what it sounds like: you find a good spot, get settled, and just be present.

This event is free, accessible, and welcoming to everyone, whether you've been birding for years or have never thought twice about the bird outside your window. Feel free to bring some snacks, and friends are welcome too!

If you have any questions, have any accessibility needs, or have any other thoughts, please let us know. We truly want to hear from you and want everyone to be able to feel bird joy to the fullest. 🙂

Meeting location and amenities:

We will be meeting at Picnic Grove 24 in Rock Creek Park, located across from the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center. The area is open and flat, with a picnic pavilion, a playground, and restroom facilities. Note: the bathrooms are gendered. The picnic grove shares a parking lot with the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, which has accessible parking.

Things to remember:

  • Water: Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated. The picnic area will also have a drink fountain for refills.

  • Sunscreen: There will be plenty of shade under the pavilion, but also make sure you’re protected with sunscreen!

  • Layers: Check the weather before you leave home. It can either get really hot or really cold in DC in April. Just make sure you have the right clothes to be comfortable.

  • Other things you can bring: snacks, a camping chair, a picnic blanket, a hat, bug spray, coloring books, and arts and crafts, etc.

  • Binoculars and bird identification books are not necessary, but you are welcome to bring them. We'll have six pairs of binoculars to lend out and a couple of bird ID books/apps to share for figuring out what birds we see and/or hear.

  • Masks are not required, but we ask everyone to physically distance and to wear a mask if they need or want to.

  • We love your pets, but please keep them at home! Service animals are always welcome.

  • If you are under 18 years old, you must be accompanied by an adult to partake in the event.

Outing leaders:

For this sit, Vivian (pronouns: she/her) and Danielle (pronouns: she/her) will serve as the outing leaders.

  • Vivian (pronouns: she/her) is a bird nerd and proud cat lady. She is on the FBC DMV leadership team and loves building community around love of nature and birds.

  • Danielle (pronouns: she/her) is a new birder but has loved how much it has connected her to nature and the passionate community around it. She is looking forward to helping to continue to grow a more inclusive community around birding through FBC DMV!

Point of contact:

If you need to get in contact with us day-of, please use “Contact Host” on the event page or email us directly ([email protected]).

Code of Conduct

Please read the FBC DMV Code of Conduct prior to the event if you haven't already. This Code of Conduct is meant to explicitly place our principles into practice, lay out what behavior is and is not acceptable from our members, participants, and our leaders, and detail how we will work to enforce those principles.
