​What: AI & Democracy with Professor Nate Persily

​We are witnessing in real time how AI is changing the way we connect, collaborate, grow and learn. AI literacy curriculums teach students how to decipher hallucinations and deep fakes, how to distinguish fact from fiction, and how to be ethical decision-makers.  For all of the problems linked to social media around child safety, mental health and democracy, AI has been described as “social media on steroids.” With social cooperation at the heart of democracy, if our youngest citizens fill a social void with AI what impact will that have on our democracy going forward?  Stanford Law Professor Nate Persily will share his thoughts on how AI will impact democracy.

​ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Nate Persily is the James B. McClatchy Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Co-Director of the Stanford Law AI Initiative, with appointments in the departments of Political Science, Communication, and the Freeman Spogli Institute of International Studies. He has served as the Senior Research Director of the Presidential Commission on Election Administration and currently chairs the AI Task Force of the American Political Science Association.  A trusted nonpartisan voice on issues related to democracy and technology, he is frequently appointed by courts to serve as a Special Master to resolve congressional redistricting disputes.  Coauthor of the leading Election Law casebook, The Law of Democracy, Professor Persily’s scholarship and legal practice address issues such as voting rights, political parties, campaign finance, redistricting, and election administration.

​​​​The Common Ground Speaker Series presents distinguished speakers in education, parenting, and health at venues across the San Francisco Peninsula. Our 2025-2026 Series will be a hybrid season with some events online and some in person. Parents, faculty, and staff at our member schools attend the Common Ground online events free of charge. Faculty and educators from non-member schools are also invited to participate free of charge. Guests from non-member schools and the general community can register and attend. Registration closes 12 hours before the start of this event or when the maximum registration capacity is reached.

​We also welcome educators from member and nonmember schools to attend our events free of charge.  However, we'd like to get a better understanding of our audience and interests, and request that you register with your work / school .edu email address.  Educators must be employees of accredited educational institutions.
