Micro-Mobility is Here, So What Next?
E-bikes, shared bicycles, delivery riders and other emerging forms of Micro-Mobility are already changing how people move, work and access opportunities across Cape Town. Yet the infrastructure, regulations and public-space arrangements intended to accommodate these changes have not necessarily kept pace.
As part of October Transport Month, the Active Mobility Forum, a programme of Young Urbanists, is bringing together voices from government, industry, civil society and the mobility ecosystem to consider what comes next.
The discussion will explore how Cape Town can better integrate Micro-Mobility into its wider transport system, including first- and last-mile commuting, safer streets, public-space allocation, charging and parking infrastructure, and the growing role of delivery and platform workers in the urban economy.
Beyond the opportunities, the conversation will examine the practical tensions emerging on our streets: competing demands for limited space, the different needs of riders and pedestrians, questions of affordability and accessibility, and the regulatory and institutional arrangements required to support safer and more inclusive mobility.
With the City advancing work on active mobility and Travel Demand Management, the discussion offers an opportunity to consider what a more coherent, people-centred response to Micro-Mobility could look like, and what government, operators and civil society should prioritise next.
