About Event

Gather to meditate with hand processed Jamaican chocolate tea (cacao) to create loving connections rooted in communal advocacy <3

Traditional medicine has always been used not just for personal wellbeing, but communal wellbeing. To honor this ancestral practice, this cacao medication will also hold space for a teach in regarding the Quantum Facility being built in South Shore, Chicago. The energy of cacao is tied to water, Chicago is along water, we are of water, and therefore, WE must protect our waters. Part of the proceeds will also go to detained migrant legal funds.

This offering is $15 to $60 sliding scale with a $35 suggested donation. Please see links in @fearofablackfemme Instagram bio to book and complete liability form. A select number of free tickets are available to South Shore and South Chicago residents. To learn more about acquiring these tickets, please contact @southsidetogether at 312-772-5383.

Cacao is an Indigenous plant medicine rooted in geographies now called “Central America,” “South America,” and the “Caribbean.” It is medicine for the heart—physical, emotionally, and spiritually. Naomi is preparing the cacao in accordance to her Jamaican traditions. In Jamaica, drinking cacao is called Chocolate Tea, and she was taught how to prepare this medicine by her grandma. Naomi’s grandma was taught by her grandma, and before, and before. This medicine has been in Naomi and Ericka’s families for thousands of years. We offer it now as an ally to help guide us back into loving relations.

The cacao offered is made from cacao pods grown, harvested, fermented, roasted, and ground in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Currently this cacao is classified as “ceremonial” in Western wellness spaces. Although it is deeply medicinal in a way that can feel “ceremonial,” it ultimately is family medicine, passed down inter-generationally and activated in home kitchens for healing. The cacao is not like the one you will buy in a store: it is smoky, slightly bitter, and moisturizing from the cocoa butter naturally occurring in the cacao.
